Tips for Installing Curtain Rods

Installing curtain rods is something that most people DIY. However, that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily easy. It’s a very mistake-prone process for most homeowners. With that in mind, below are some helpful tips on installing curtain rods, so you can avoid common mistakes.

1 – Select Curtains First

Curtains rods are often seen as standard hardware, so it’s very common for people to select and even install rods before selecting curtains. This can be a mistake. Normally, the rods need to fit the curtains! How so? There are many different styles of curtains these days,… and they may hang on the rods differently.

For instance, if your curtains have grommets or tabs at the top, then a thick curtain rod may look nicer. Curtains with a narrow slot across the top require a thinner rod to fit through the slot. Selecting rods first may limit your curtain options or result in the need to replace the rods. Additionally, curtains come in different lengths. By waiting, you can install your rods at the precise length needed, avoiding extra holes in your wall from having to move them later.

2 – Consider Placement Benefits

You have some options when it comes to where rods are installed relative to your window trim. The rods can run the same width of the windows, perfectly covering the space, or they can overhang the left and right of the window. The added benefit of an overhang is that when your curtains are drawn to the side, your entire window is exposed. This offers maximum views and lets in more sunlight.

3 – Use The Right Tools

Tools are extremely important for installing any type of hardware. First, you’ll need the correct-sized screwdrivers to avoid stripping the screws. A level will verify that the rods are straight. A tape measure is helpful too, to confirm equal spacing to the window trim. Finally, a step ladder is a must for safety reasons.

Summary of Tips for Installing Curtain Rods

Installing curtain rods isn’t too hard, if you follow the proper steps. Don’t get too anxious and install rods before you’ve found the perfect curtains. Quite frankly, choosing curtains is often more difficult than finding rods, so always do that first. And remember, there’s more than one spot to place rods, so consider the pros and cons of each. Finally, use the right tools and you’ll get the job done quickly and do it right the first time!
