Shade and Blind Cleaning

Lynne Greene Blind and Shade Cleaning
Man cleaning dust window blind by vacuum cleaner at home. Themes housework and housekeeping.
  • Cleaning shades and blinds can help maintain their appearance, extend their lifespan, and improve indoor air quality. Here’s a breakdown of the best cleaning methods by type:
    • General Tips (All Types)
Dust regularly: Use a microfiber cloth, duster, or vacuum with a brush attachment.
Spot clean: Mild detergent and water for small stains.
Avoid harsh chemicals: Especially on wood, fabric, or specialty finishes.

      1. Vinyl or Aluminum Blinds
      Dusting:
Close the slats and dust with a microfiber cloth or vacuum.
      Reverse the slats and repeat.
      Deep Cleaning:
Remove blinds and soak in a bathtub with warm water and mild soap.
Rinse and dry thoroughly before rehanging.

      2. Wood Blinds
      Dusting Only:
Use a dry microfiber cloth or duster.
Avoid water—it can warp the wood.
      Spot Clean:
Lightly dampen a cloth with wood-safe cleaner.

      3. Faux Wood Blinds
      Dusting:
      Same as wood.
      Cleaning:
You can use a damp cloth or mild soap since they’re moisture-resistant.

      4. Fabric Shades (e.g., Roman, Cellular, Pleated)
      Vacuum:
Use a brush attachment on low suction.
      Spot Clean:
Blot gently with a damp sponge and mild detergent.
      Deep Cleaning:
For cellular/honeycomb shades, blow air through the cells with a hair dryer or compressed air to clear dust.
Professional cleaning is recommended for delicate or high-end fabrics. Call Lynne Greene Interiors for professional shade, room darkening and drapery cleaning @ 781-221-8422

      5. Roller Shades
      Dusting:
Wipe down with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
      Stains:
Use warm, soapy water on durable vinyl rollers.

      6. Vertical Blinds
      Fabric Vanes:
Spot clean or remove and hand wash (check manufacturer care tags).
      Vinyl Vanes:
Remove and wipe down with soapy water.

      Pro Tip: DIY Cleaning Solution
Mix 1 part white vinegar, 1 part water, and a drop of dish soap.
      Great for most non-wood blinds.
